What are the best tools to measure cognitive performance?

When clinicians or researchers want to measure a person's cognitive abilities, they may use a variety of tests or questionnaires to test thinking skills, subjective complaints and non-cognitive symptoms. These tests are usually well-validated for use in most individuals, but may not accurately capture the difficulties experienced by adults with psychiatric disorders, or adults in older age groups.

In the Neurocognitive Disorders Lab, we are currently investigating:

  • How well ADHD questionnaires capture symptom presentation in older adults

  • Which neuropsychological measures are most sensitive to detect early dementia in bipolar disorder

  • Whether the source of normative comparison data impacts test result interpretation
